Baylor University Medical Center
Also known as BUMC or "Big Baylor", Baylor University Medical center is our home institution. Centrally located in Dallas, BUMC is a quaternary care center and Level 1 urban trauma center. BUMC is the largest of the hospitals in the Baylor Scott and White Health Network, which spans across the state of Texas and includes 52 hospitals. The hospital has 914 staffed beds, an 85 bed emergency department, sees over 300,000 patients annually, and performs over 20,000 surgical cases each year across the 50 operating rooms on site. The operating rooms include 5 robots, as well as dedicated hybrid and cardiac/thoracic ORs.
As one of the busiest trauma centers in the DFW metroplex, BUMC handles approximately 20-30% of all trauma in Dallas. We also see a higher than average percentage of penetrating trauma. The national average for penetrating trauma is about 10%. BUMC has approximately 2400 trauma admissions annually, of which 20% are penetrating trauma.

BUMC also has distinguished itself as a center of excellence for ECMO, and is the largest ECMO center in the region. We also have the region's only ECMO deployment team, providing rapid response to surrounding states, bringing expertise and equipment to the bedside of critically ill patients who are then transferred by the team back to BUMC for further care. This team is comprised of cardiothoracic surgeons and surgical intensivists.
Our surgery residents spend at least 50% of their residency at BUMC.
John Peter Smith Hospital
JPS is our other major training site, and a recurring favorite of the residents in our program. The hospital is a 573 bed level 1 trauma center located in Fort Worth. All surgical subspecialties aside from transplant are represented at JPS, and unlike BUMC there is no division of services. That lends huge variety to the training in this institution, and gives the residents a chance to see a different practice model from BUMC.

As a public county hospital serving all of Tarrant County, JPS provides a unique opportunity to care for a diverse patient population. We see patients from all walks of life, and from a multitude of different backgrounds and ethnicities. The ED sees approximately 130,000 patients annually. In an average 6 week rotation, residents typically perform over 100 surgical procedures, and also gain robotic experience.

Baylor Waxahachie
Also known as "Wax", the Baylor Scott and White Medical Center at Waxahachie is another resident favorite. The hospital is located approximately 30 minutes south of Dallas, and provides a community hospital experience. Wax is not an urban trauma center, but that doesn't mean there is any lack of complex cases. The hospital has 106 beds, and a wide variety of surgical subspecialties are present, including robotics. Residents spend 6 weeks annually at this institution during years 2-4.
Cook Children's Hospital
Cook Children's Hospital is a 430 bed hospital located in Fort Worth. It is a level 2 pediatric trauma center, and boasts a level IV neonatal intensive care unit capable of caring for even the sickest of infants. The emergency department sees over 100,000 patients annually, and the surgical services are busy every day of the week with cases ranging from bread and butter to the most complex reconstructions for congenital anomalies.
