Why does DEI Matter?

20 years ago, the IOM produced a report on disparities in healthcare, starting the conversation on the need for greater diversity. These disparities still cost Texans approximately $4.6 billion annually in healthcare expenditures, not to mention the poorer outcomes and unnecessary deaths. BUMC recognizes the importance of addressing diversity in healthcare, and thus the Community Engagement Council was born.

The Community Engagement Council helped Baylor celebrate Pride with an event at the hospital, as well as a tent at the Dallas Pride festival. Cupcakes and Baylor swag were distributed, and Safe Space badge stickers were given out to staff.

GME Diversity week

Baylor's message that "we're all in this together" was the centerpiece of this week, which was aimed at showcasing the diversity throughout our staff and medical education department. The Community Engagement Council was front and center, helping to celebrate what makes each of use unique. The week was capped by Dr. Steven Krebaum's Community Engagement Committee's Grand Rounds on caring for LGBTQ+ patients.
