General Facts

  • Dallas has a population of approximately 1.2 million people, making it the 9th largest US city

  • The DFW metroplex population is approximately 7.6 million, which makes DFW the 4th most populous metro area in the US.  Interestingly, we are the largest metro area in the US without a direct link to the ocean.

  • The Dallas art district is the largest urban arts district in the US

  • The Dallas Zoo is the oldest zoo in Texas, and one of the 10 oldest in the US

  • The Texas State Fair, a must see while living here, takes place less than 5 miles from BUMC

  • Dallas is definitely an urban area, but we also have green spaces. The metro area boasts over 160 miles of hiking and biking trails, including the Katy trail which runs through the heart of the city.

  • We have 2 major airports nearby, DFW and Love Field. This means you'll never struggle to find a flight for vacation. You'll usually fly Southwest out of Love field, or American Airlines out of DFW (both of these airlines are headquartered in Dallas).

  • Cost of living in Dallas sits right around the median, making Dallas one of the more affordable big cities to live in.  A 1-bedroom apartment in a nice neighborhood within 10 minutes of BUMC will run about $1500-1800. People willing to have a commute closer to 20 minutes will find that the rent gets significantly cheaper.

  • Texas has no state income tax, and Dallas has no local income tax, which makes things much more convenient for filing

  • We are one of only 13 metro areas in America that has a team in each of the four major pro sports leagues. We have the Dallas Cowboys, the Texas Rangers, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Dallas Stars.

  • Our weather is usually on the warm and dry side. It often gets above 100 degrees in the summer, and winter temperatures in the 40s send people running for their parkas.
